VARIABILITY OF INTERNODE LENGTH, TECHNICAL LENGTH, AND STEM DIAMETER OF INDUSTRIAL HEMP IN THE DRY-STEPPE ZONE OF KHAKASSIA

Abstract:
The article presents the results of ecological variety testing of industrial hemp, the varieties Vera, Nadezhda (originators - FSBSI «Federal Research Center for Bast Fiber Crops», Konoplex LLC), as well as Maria and Omegadar 1 (originator – FSBSO «National Center of Grain named after P.P. Lukyanenko») were studied. The experiments were conducted in the dry-steppe zone of the Republic of Khakassia on light-chestnut soils of the experimental field of the Institute of Management, Economics and Agrotechnologies of the Katanov Khakass State University. These soils are characterized by a high content of available phosphorus and potassium and a low level of nitrate nitrogen. Sowing was carried out on May 15th-17th using a hand seed sower RS-1. The predecessor crop was spring wheat. The seeding rate is 40 viable seeds per linear meter (42 kg/ha). By harvest, 19-22 plants per linear meter remained. The net plot area is 2.1 m². Sampling was carried out in four replications of 25 plants each. Weather conditions accounted for 69% of the variability in basal stem diameter. Varietal differences determined the manifestation of the factor by 23%. During the study years, Nadezhda and Omegadar 1 varieties had thinner stems, with diameters of 0.85 and 0.76 cm, respectively. High heterogeneity was observed in the Vera variety. Both weather conditions and varietal differences each accounted for 45% of the variability in technical stem length. Over the three‑year study period, the highest technical stem length was recorded in the Omegadar 1 variety (177.75 cm). The average technical stem length in the sample was 159.00 cm in 2020, 184.80 cm in 2021, and 189.44 cm in 2022. Throughout the three‑year period, Omegadar 1 variety exhibited a low coefficient of variation for the trait “technical stem length” (6.76–7.74%). Varietal characteristics accounted for 74% of the variability in internode length, while weather conditions influenced the trait by 14%, and the year × variety interaction accounted for 12%. On average, over 3 years of experiments, the Omegadar 1 variety showed the best results: the technical stem length was 177,75 cm, the stem diameter at the base before harvesting was 0,86 cm, and the internode length was 11,09 cm. This variety is recommended for use as a source of traits in the breeding of forms with a high yield of long and high‑quality fibr.
