SEED PRODUCTIVITY OF WOAD DEPENDING ON THE SOWING TIME IN THE STEPPE ZONE OF WESTERN SIBERIA

Abstract:
Animal productivity depends not only on their breed characteristics, but also on their access to high-quality feed. In Russia, the species composition of natural flora plants has not yet been fully utilized. One such plant that can be used to supplement the species composition of forage crops in the West Siberian region is woad plant. However, despite a number of advantages of this crop over those cultivated in Siberia, the woad plant, due to insufficient development of its seed production technology and the availability of the required amount of seeds, has not yet been widely cultivated in the region. Field experiments were conducted in the steppe zone of the Omsk Region at the experimental field of the State Educational Institution of Primary Vocational Education Vocational School No. 64 in the Poltavsky District. The soil is ordinary chernozem with a humus horizon of 18-22 cm and a humus content of 4.4%. The groundwater level is more than 6 m, and the pH is 6.7–7.1. The purpose of the research is to determine and recommend the most effective time for sowing woad for seeds in the steppe zone of Western Siberia. It has been established that woad is highly promising for cultivation in these arid conditions. It is not demanding in terms of growing conditions, is cold-resistant, tolerates autumn and spring frosts, is resistant to prolonged summer drought, and has stable seed production. It is best to sow woad for seeds in the steppe zone in the spring, from May 5 to May 20. At the same time, it successfully overwinters (69–80 %), forms a full-fledged dense seed grass stand (47–56 generative shoots/m2) in the second year of life, and has the highest yield of pods (0.63–0.70 t/ha), which is 76–86 % higher than when it is sown in the summer from 5 June to 5 August.
