Studies assessing the toxicity of synthetic pyrethroids indicate a potential risk of metabolic disturbance in warm-blooded animals. Many authors note the development of oxidative stress against the background of the antioxidant system efficiency decrease. Since catalase is an integral part of the enzymatic antioxidant system, we formulated the following goal - to determine the effect of acute and chronic intoxication with synthetic pyrethroids on the dynamics of liver catalase activity in male rats. The study was conducted on mature male Wistar rats weighing 230-250 g. Acute intoxication was modeled by a single administration of deltamethrin or cypermethrin to animals at doses of 1/2 and 1/5 LD50 of these drugs. The observation period was 30 days. Chronic intoxication was modeled by daily administration of deltamethrin or cypermethrin to rats at doses of 1/100 LD50. The duration of the chronic experiment was 120 days. The liver was removed from the animals under anesthesia and homogenized. The total protein content and catalase enzyme activity were determined in the liver homogenates. The obtained data were processed using the Mann-Whitney statistical criterion with the Bonferroni correction. The study showed that acute intoxication with deltamethrin or cypermethrin causes an increase in catalase activity during the first three days of the experiment, followed by inhibition of activity on the 7th and 30th day of observation. This trend is most pronounced when synthetic pyrethroids are administered to animals at a dose of 1/2 LD50. In chronic intoxication in rats, a cumulative effect is observed with gradual inhibition of the enzyme on the 120th day of the experiment. The changes are more pronounced with the introduction of deltamethrin.
